PECULIAR TRAVEL SUGGESTIONS
This proposed roadside attraction is located in the fictional town of Ilium, New York, and is based off the award-winning Kurt Vonnegut novel Cat’s Cradle. Peculiar Travel Suggestions reimagines traditional spaces of worship in order to reflect the practices of the fictional religion of Bokononism and it encompasses both themes of Vonnegut’s entire collection of writing, such as minimalism and satire, and themes from the fictional religion built on lies, misdirection, and disorientation.

This project may seem like one that doesn’t make any sense, but any Vonnegut readers will know that it is totally intentional. Bokononism is a religion intended to confuse and disorient, so the journey to this roadside attraction begins on a winding path that takes visitors to a building seemingly suspended with the entrance facing away from the street. Upon entry, visitors are struck with an interior that is much less straightfoward than flat walls and ceilings. Portrusions on every surface mislead the visitor and also give them a space to reflect on their own, as is tradition in Bokononism.
